The dates of this composition and of the re-elaborations of the quartet are numerous. The first printed copy bears the date 1983. On this copy the author has annotated “versione 1983, precedente la revisione del 1986” (1983 version, preceding the 1986 revision). In the latest monographic catalogue of the Suvini Zerboni editions the date 1992 appears, however. Might this mean some new elaboration? The brief presentation which follows arises from the reading of the 1983 version. A more up-to-date analysis will be proposed in the future on the basis of the 1992 version.
The quartet writing of For-Four seems rich, suggestive and sure. One has no difficulty in imagining that a good performance would satisfy the listener, however rebellious they might be as far as the music of the present is concerned.
The piece is spread out over three movements, with a brief, central intermezzo.
