What strikes the listener of this long piece of work is the absence of a formal architecture. Its passing through time occurs 'as far as the ear can near' and dislikes the mensural time of clocks.   What prevails is a 'time without time', opposed to any mechanical scansion. A time closer to the forgetful one of the summer siesta than to the alert one of the pressing appointments. To the summer and to its sunny afternoons belong the acute melodies of the bass clarinet which this piece offers profusely.
